![]() “They’re showing a lot of their experience with this. It’s the only projector we recommend that comes with a 3-year warranty (most come with a single year). It has two HDMI ports, one USB-A port, and a USB-C port, and if you leave your cables behind, it has Android TV built in so you can stream directly from apps, as long as you’ve got a hotspot or wireless network nearby.Īccording to Steinberg, for many companies, portable projectors are often an afterthought since they’re such a niche market, but that’s not the case with the GS50. ![]() Depending on your needs, this projector can produce an image ranging from 80 inches (diagonal) from a distance of 7 feet, up to 100 inches from 8.7 feet, and it’s one of only two projectors we recommend that can project an image from an angle and straighten itself. ![]() The GS50 also has a built-in autofocus that adjusts the image when it gets blurry, which less expensive projectors like the AAXA P7 lack, so you don’t have to fiddle with the lens yourself. BenQ claims a battery life of up to two hours, but as noted above, it’s closer to 90 minutes in most cases. “The sound won’t rock your world, but it’s better than most,” he says. This projector can even be used as a Bluetooth speaker when paired with a smartphone. It has a 2.1 stereo channel, as well as a dedicated subwoofer, which no other projector we recommend has. It has a charming, outdoorsy look that’s backed by a waterproof and dustproof exterior that’s drop-proof from up to 2.3 feet, and it’s the only projector we recommend that features that kind of protection.Īmong all the projectors Steinberg has tested at this size, he says the GS50’s speakers sound the best. At 500 lumens, it’s about the bare minimum brightness you’d want, but its other features make up for that if you’re only using it in dark spaces. You probably wouldn’t want to watch a movie at peak brightness.” Even if you don’t manually calibrate the picture settings on your projector, switching to a preset mode like cinema (which will provide more accurate color reproduction) can give a better overall picture quality than the standard settings.īrightness: 500 lumens | Resolution: 1920 x 1080 | Projector size: 7.32” x 6.06” x 5.75”, 5.07 pounds | Screen size: up to 100 inches diagonally from 8.7 feet away | Connections: two HDMI, USB-C, USB-A | Power source: A/C, built in rechargeable battery | Sound: two 5W speakers, Bluetoothįor those who need a projector that’s both compact and durable enough to be lugged around, Steinberg recommends the BenQ GS50. “If you put it on cinema mode instead of vivid, it drops a lot due to softer elements like contrast. “Even with 2,000 lumens, once you start calibrating it, the peak brightness goes down,” he says. When Lin was looking at projectors for a small space in his home, brightness played a key role, as he needed something that would show up against a good deal of ambient light. “Anything less than 500 isn’t usable, it’ll lose all the contrast and black levels with ambient light,” he says, “It’s awful, it’s almost unwatchable.” He also notes that for projectors with built-in rechargeable batteries, the projector won’t shine at full brightness while on battery power, so it’s important to account for that if you’re planning on using it away from an outlet. Steinberg says a projector’s brightness, which is measured in lumens (the amount of light emitted), is one of the most important things to look out for in a projector. Here are some of the best portable projectors you can buy online. I also looked at reviews from our colleagues at the Verge, and tested a few projectors in my home and outdoors. ![]() To find out what makes a good portable projector stand out, and what to avoid, I spoke with Mark Steinberg, a senior technologist at B&H Photo, as well as Eric Lin, a cinematographer based in Brooklyn. These compact projectors are all about convenience and portability, so they won’t be as bright or sharp as a high-end projector, but for an impromptu movie night indoors or out, they can’t be beat. Once they’re connected to a streaming device, laptop, smartphone, or game console via Bluetooth or cables, they can play movies, YouTube videos, or any other type of multimedia (with some limitations due to Digital Rights Management protections more on that, below). Also known as pico or pocket projectors, they are small, typically more affordable than their larger counterparts, and easy enough to move from room to room or bring to a rooftop hang or barbecue. Portable projectors can give you an instant theater space, and not just at home. ![]() ![]() How it works: Deep within the bowels of Colossal Cave, “a huge green dragon bars the way!” Your objective, naturally, is to get past him to explore the area beyond. If you readers enjoy and/or find this article useful, then perhaps it can become a semi-regular series going forward.Īnd now, with all that said, let’s accentuate the positive for once and relive some classic puzzles that have been delighting their players for decades.īy Will Crowther and Don Woods, public domain, 1977. I’ve split the field evenly between parser-driven text adventures and point-and-click graphic adventures. As that statement would indicate, I’ve restricted this list to games I’ve already written about, meaning that none of those found here were published after 1992. All ten games are found in my personal Hall of Fame and come with my highest recommendation. Needless to say, there will be spoilers galore in what follows, so if you haven’t played these games, and you think you might ever want to, you should absolutely do so before reading about them here. Still, we’ll do the best we can today, and see if we can’t tease some design lessons out of ten corking puzzles from adventure games of yore. ![]() In any creative discipline, rules will only get you so far at some point, codification must make way for the ineffable. As such, the craft of making merely good or fair puzzles is largely subsumed in lists of what not to do - yes, yet more negative reinforcements! - such as Graham Nelson’s “Bill of Player’s Rights” or Ron Gilbert’s “Why Adventure Games Suck and What We Can Do About It.” It’s much more difficult, however, to explain what makes a brilliant, magical puzzle. They should be reasonably soluble by any reasonably intelligent, careful player, without having to fall back on the tedium of brute-forcing them or the pointlessness of playing from a walkthrough. It’s not overly difficult to generalize what makes for fair or merely “good” puzzles. So, when my reader and supporter Casey Muratori wrote to me to suggest an article that singles out some great puzzles for detailed explication and analysis, it sounded like a fine idea to me. And even if you just read this blog to experience (or re-experience) these old games through the sensibility of your humble author here, you’re missing out if all you ever hear about are the puzzles that don’t work. If you’re a designer looking for tips from the games of the past, it certainly helps to have some positive as well as negative examples to look at. Unfortunately, this leaves the situation rather unbalanced. I want my readers to have the thrill of tackling those for themselves. Spoiling the great puzzles, however, is something I’m always loath to do. The fact is, I don’t feel much compunction about spoiling bad puzzles. But, for reasons that I hope everyone can understand, I’ve spent much more time illuminating negative than positive examples of puzzle design. ![]() I’ve always tried to take the subject seriously, and have even dared to hope that some of these writings might be of practical use to someone - might help designers of the present or future make better games. This blog has become, among other things, an examination of good and bad game-design practices down through the years, particularly within the genre of adventure games. ![]() Frozen Gnaar Cave (Anonymous & shy friend):.If you still can't find it, Tengu Drop made a video on how to get there: Here.Ī quirk with this is that, if you try to leave the area from anywhere but "Big Stairs, Little Stairs", the game will say: "Warning: You are leaving the battlefield area!" (exer2k) Here if you jump down carefully you will reach a cave. In the puzzle "Big Stairs, Little Stairs", go straight ahead of the entrance and to the cliff edge on the right of the blue laser emitter. To be able to get this you need to finish every puzzle in this level and get the star. It's possible to reach it using the jetpack, but another way is to take an Hexahedron, put it on the fan, then jump on it as the laser connects to the connecter to activate the fan, then you can jump to the snowman from up high.ĭon't forget to fix up his fallen button for a surprise. In the "Jammer Quarantine" puzzle, it's behind the quarantined jammer on the promontory. Tengu Drop made a video on how to get there: Here. Here jump down from the cliff edge to small ledge with a tree. Go through the purple field just to the right of the previous easter egg. Serious Sam in Carbonite (LostHopeFate + Tengu Drop):.In the "Weathertop" puzzle, head directly to the cliff edge opposite of the entrance and look down. Just make the jump on top of the rampart with the last box and you'll get it. Eventually when you get to the rampart, follow it to the spot above the entrance, you can see something glowing. In "Multiply Impossible Ascension", you need to stack up all three boxes on the forward-right corner to scale up the walls and roof. I'll eventually write a full guide for this but meanwhile you should look at this video guide from Tengu Drop: Here. There is a pedestal on which you can rebuild it for a little surprise. On this map you can find 10 parts of a Gnaar statue hidden a bit everywhere outside the puzzles areas. You will soon hear and see a glitchy square on the ground. Looking at the entrance of the puzzle "The Conservatory", follow the right wall of this puzzle. But I'll add it anyway to avoid any "you missed something obvious" talk :3. This one is so hard to miss It's certainly more part of the story than an Easter Egg. Maybe taking the box out wasn't the intended way but it's much easier like this. Note: When you get on top of the wall, if follow it you can actually jump on the sunken structure for another fan and a way to land right on top of the mechanism. You will land right next to the teleporter. Use the box to get on the wall and put the fan into the mechanism. Here start by sending the box outside using the fan, then take the other fan with you before getting outside.įrom here take the box and the fan to the other side of the nearest sunken contraption. Now put one on the air flow, use the other one to jump on it then take it with you before jumping on the wall. In the "Behind the Iron Curtain puzzle", get to the fan with 2 boxes and bring those up on the platform. To be able to use the telescope you first need to get the key in the water right below it. Note: If you have trouble getting to the telescope, another method is to drop a box mid-fly on top of the column and use it to stop yourself.īehind the "Alley of the Pressure Plates" you will find it in the middle of the sunken structure. To manage this you must hold left and bounce on the column during the jump. To get there, use the left fan to jump on the platform on the left. ![]() First you need to get the key in the far right area of the puzzle, it's easy to find. The pre-facelift Atlas is a little too slab-sided for my tastes. Sometimes a company updates a car just to update it. Not all mid-cycle refreshes are created equal. What might be important to you is that it looks good, it’s as big inside as the Superdome, and you can afford it. Maybe the small little details that are so important to car reviewers and enthusiasts are not, in fact, important to you. A Kia Telluride is better, sure, but do you really want to wait for one? If you want the most luxurious and probably best three-row SUV, a BMW dealer will happily help you locate and vacate your wallet in exchange for an X7. If you want the truckiest thing you can buy with three rows, try a Tahoe or Expedition. There may be no ethical consumption in capitalism, but you still gotta buy a car sometimes. Now, for 2024, the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport have become simplified and more feature-rich to compete with the sudden crowded world of three-row crossovers. ![]() That the company added on the five-seat-only Atlas Cross Sport was more a reflection of consumer sentiment than practicality, but it’s a car company. The Atlas was bigger than a Tiguan but cheaper than a Touareg. Prior to that, Volkswagen offered only the completely fine Tiguan (also a smart play, and big seller) and kinda cool Touareg–a vehicle with a name as hard to pronounce as its price tag was difficult to justify. This was before the Kia Telluride, Grand Cherokee L, and way ahead of the Grand Highlander. Neither the best, nor worst, vehicle in its segment, Volkswagen realized a key selling point of big crossovers would be a third-row the company figured it could build a reasonably nice and reasonably affordable SUV-like thing with enough room for seven passengers. One of the best ideas to come out of Wolfsburg was the 2017 introduction of the Volkswagen Atlas. Even before Dieselgate and VW’s road to EV Damascus moment, the products started to get better while retaining some of the company’s heritage. To the company’s credit, it seems to have figured this out rather quickly. ![]() Some of this was the inevitable outcome of Dieselgate in 2015, but something way worse happened to Volkswagen: Kia and Hyundai figured out how to make better cars, right around the time VW was cratering its own brand value. Sales went up, for a while, before crashing down. This gambit of making cheaper and duller Volkswagens almost worked. Sure, the company made some great cars, like the Golf R, but that was the exception, not the rule. It tried to become a world-tackling company with a vehicle for everyone things became a little bit cheaper, with the company trading on its past to cover up the creeping beigeness. Plus, it had a little flower pot built into the interior!Īt some point, roughly around the de-contented B7 Passat or neue Rabbit, Volkswagen decided it wanted to become another Toyota and lost some of that charm. The New Beetle wasn’t rear-wheel drive, rear-engined, but it was cute and reasonably affordable. Even as the company grew it mostly maintained its Volkswageness. As those kids grew up, Volkswagen grew with them, adding the sporty Golf, pleasing Jetta, and yuppie Passat. Volkswagen’s popularity in this country stems originally from the Beetle, which was a peculiar and lovable product, well-timed and especially well-marketed to a generation of young people. It’s a pragmatic exercise in late capitalism and, properly spec’d, the exact right car for the person who isn’t exactly sure what they want. “This is our most profitable vehicle” a Volkswagen product planner bragged during the brief morning introduction to the 2024 VW Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport and, frankly, that nicely sums up the pair of big crossovers. ![]() Skype es un programa ampliamente utilizado en todo el mundo. There are a number of possible scenarios for how Paul could have employed scribes given what we know about scribes and how they functioned in letter-writing capacities in antiquity. This insight has potentially far-reaching consequences for the way we ought to understand the processes that went into the writing of Romans and likely Paul’s other letters. This suggests that Paul used a scribe, either lay or professional, to pen this letter. At the end of this letter, we are informed that it was Tertius, not Paul, who actually wrote the main body of the letter, even though Paul claims at the beginning of the letter that he is the one sending it (see Romans 1:1–7). This can be established fairly easily from the reference, cited above, to Romans 16:22. With some of Paul’s epistles, we can be certain that he did not actually sit down with a calamus (reed pen) and charta (parchment sheets) or papyrus and write them out. Rather, it has to do with issues directly related to their original writing and composition. This is not a matter of pseudonymity, where someone else composed certain epistles and fraudulently passed them off as the Apostle’s, and does not necessarily imply that it is inappropriate to call Paul the “author” of the thirteen epistles bearing his name. ![]() While Paul is the sender of these letters, and by implication the author, upon close examination it appears that Paul did not actually write some of these epistles. Of the twenty-seven books that make up the New Testament, thirteen directly bear the name of the Apostle Paul. ![]() Blumell was a PhD student at the Centre for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto when this was published. ![]() Then Koroviev, Behemoth, and Woland chase him from the apartment and magically transport him to a jetty in Yalta, many miles away from Moscow. Meanwhile, as Chapter 7 begins, Stepan Bogdanovich Likhodyev, or Styopa (and also Berlioz's roommate in apartment Number 50), wakes from a drunken night on the town to discover Woland in his room. Later, when he wakes up in Chapter 8, he has a discussion with Professor Stravinsky in which logic is used to convince him that he must remain as a patient in the hospital. Ivan tells the doctor in a disorganized and crazed fashion that Berlioz died at the hands of a foreign professor, who was with Pontius Pilate at the time of Jesus' death he is tranquilized when he attempts to jump from the window, and the doctor diagnoses him with schizophrenia and alcoholism. The police are called, and Ivan is taken to Professor Stravinsky's mental hospital by Ryukhin. In the process he loses his clothes and causes a scene at Griboyedov's, where writers and critics have been waiting for Berlioz to start a meeting. Ivan is baffled and disoriented he decides to get to the bottom of the evening's strange events, and embarks on a mad pursuit after Woland, Koroviev, and Behemoth the tomcat around the city.
